Emerson
âHi, Iâm Emerson Mackenzie,â I say to the salon coordinator at the front desk. âI have an appointment with Lisa.â
âYou can go on back.â She smiles. âSheâs in room one.â
âThanks.â
Grabbing the handle, I tap lightly on the frosted glass door before turning the knob and stepping inside to find Lisa smiling down at her phone.
I grin, thinking itâs likely Bass whoâs putting that smile on her face. Heâs been spending a lot of time with Lisa and staying with her almost every night after Jay goes to bed.
âHey,â I say, closing the door behind me.
âHey, girl,â she replies, still smiling as she sets her phone down and rises from her chair behind the manicure table. âHave a seat.â She holds out her hand to take my purse, then gestures to one of the pedicure chairs lined up on the opposite side of the room.
She straddles the stool and turns on the water to as hot as I can stand it. âSo whatâs new this week?â
I fill her in on Harper, which leads to me spilling the family secret about Willow being Coleâs daughter. By the time Iâm finished, weâre both in tears.
âI think you should talk to Max and Jessica first. Maybe sit down with Harper and talk to her as well.â
âYeah, Iâm definitely going to do that. I just want to be careful. I donât want her to feel like Iâve betrayed her either, but my family comes first.â
âTrue that.â
As sheâs putting the final coat of polish on my toenails, I relax against the leather head rest and exhale a long breath. âI need your advice.â
Lisaâs lips pull to the side. âDoes this have anything to do with a certain ball player?â
My eyes go wide as I tilt my head down to look at her with pinched brows. âWhâhow did you know?â
She lets out a light laugh. âWell for starters, that night at dinner, I saw the way your face lit up when you saw him at the table.â
âOh my God.â I press my palm to my forehead. âWas I that obvious?â
âNot at all.â She shakes her head. âYou just looked really happy to be surrounded by friends.â
âI donât know what to do. I like him⦠a lot.â I immediately laugh at my admission. âAnd weâre back in high school.â I alter my voice to sound like a teenager. âI like him a lot.â
Lisa and I both laugh at my expense, but my laughter quickly dies and turns into a sigh. âItâs too soon, right?â
Lisa frowns, looking confused. âToo soon for what? To be happy? To be with someone who makes you feel good?â Sheâs saying all the right things, but it doesnât squash how I feel.
âAll of it. Letâs not forget the fact that heâs too young for me.â
âSays who?â
I shrug. âMe? Heâs twenty-eight.â
Lisa laughs. âEmerson, heâs not a teenager. Heâs a man. A fine-ass man.â She waggles her eyebrows. âYou feel guilty,â she states matter-of-factly.
âOf course I feel guilty.â I rub my hand over my heart. âMarcus was the love of my life and the only man Iâve ever been with.
